New Way Stationary Engines

Aim - To serve and support the New Way Stationary Engine restoration community.
There was a New Way Stationary Motor inclined to Hit and Miss. It was designed that way but intermittently it would missfire and this in the confines of the beekeepers shed fired my imagination, grabbing my senses. I just loved the sound of the New Way 3.5Hp working - likely fuelled by a too rich mixture.
With each missfire came the tell tale puff of blue smoke and via the old sawbench, the beekeeping manufacturing business was underway, alive and well. Alf was in his element. Romance, nah, hard work but Hoots the New Way went a long way in firing the imagination of times past running in the present. The present, after all, that's where life is, it's not in the past, but romancing the past, that's the present if you're living it.
The priveledge of life. Present and past is now!!! - alive.

CHARTING DETAIL
SERIES / MODEL / TYPE  - CHART
NEW WAY MOTOR COMPANY produced engines with a designated heirachy of :
  • Series - Engines of a particular design or build. eg "S" or standard series - heavier duty engines that spanned twins, horizontals and verticals
  • Model - Sub level related to HP
    • Initially New Way designated models of engines chronologically and alphabetically ie.
      • 1st engine was a model A - 3.5 HP Vertical.
      • 2nd engine was Model B - 6 HP Horizontal Twin
      • 3rd engine was Model C - 2.5 HP Vertical
    • Later, model designation within a series was defined by the HP.
      • The chronogical use of Model letters appears to have changed during the release of New Way Motor Company's large "J " series range.
      • "J" Series was their first foray into wide ranging HP size engines utilizing essentially one format in design.
  • Type - dictated by and changed with technology and advancement eg Hit Miss and Throttle Governed.
    • Type was therefore common accross different series engines if they used the same technology. eg.
      • Plain Hit & Miss were Type "C" engines
      • Plain Throttle Governed were Type "F" engines

ENGINE MODEL NUMBERS in Descending Order
NOTE- The first engine commercially produced, the vertical single of  3.5 Hp is their most popular engine with virtually twice the numbers registered of its clocest rivals of the 4.5 Hp vertical of the same series and the later throttle governed Series A, 5HP engines.

ENGINE NUMBERS determined by CONFIGURATION
Depicts the engine numbers according to the format of the engine. By far the single cylinder verticals are the highest represented by a factor of approximately 3X.

ENGINE NUMBERS by SERIES
The early "Standard", Series S engine which were virtually all Type C Hit Miss engines are far and away the most well represented engines. These include verticals, horizontals and twins. Note 1 horz. twin in the chart is throttle governed.
S Series engines represent about half the engines on the registry.

The "S" Series or Standard engines were the New Way Motor Company's heavy duty or industrial engine.

Australian Engine registrations are really pushing up toward US Registration. For a small nation this points to a good product and enthusiastic dealerships, especially on the part of Horwoods of South Australia. Horwoods are the same company that went on to manufacture New Way Engines in Australia.

New Way Motor Company started with their 3.5 Hp vertical engine. Did they get it right as far as the market was concerned - Yes. When you look at the numbers over all their models from 1905 to the 1930s, there is one HP size that stands tall above all other sizes.
Yes, it's the 3.5Hp by near 2 to 1 on any other size.

Still only one engine registered that was manufactured from New Way Motor Co. plant Ontario CANADA.

  2. George, Is it possible my 2.5HP vertical was intended to run on kerosene? Do you think I should try it? Thanks for the great registry of these old engines. Mine is one of the ones in Texas, USA.

    1. Mike,
If it is a type C, generally expect it to run on petrol/gas. If it is a series M then if the carb is heated by exhaust it would be designed to run on kero.
Either case you need to start on petrol/gas to get the motor nice and hot before switching over. You can certainly try it you just need to be able to switch between fuels once the motor is hot.

    2. Thanks George, for the information. It is a vertical model-C and it doesn't run very well. It acts like the fuel or fuel delivery is the source of the problem so it was just an idea that maybe I should be trying kero. By the way, if you know of a source for literature on these I'd be interested. Thanks for such a great registry.
