New Way Stationary Engines

Aim - To serve and support the New Way Stationary Engine restoration community.
There was a New Way Stationary Motor inclined to Hit and Miss. It was designed that way but intermittently it would missfire and this in the confines of the beekeepers shed fired my imagination, grabbing my senses. I just loved the sound of the New Way 3.5Hp working - likely fuelled by a too rich mixture.
With each missfire came the tell tale puff of blue smoke and via the old sawbench, the beekeeping manufacturing business was underway, alive and well. Alf was in his element. Romance, nah, hard work but Hoots the New Way went a long way in firing the imagination of times past running in the present. The present, after all, that's where life is, it's not in the past, but romancing the past, that's the present if you're living it.
The priveledge of life. Present and past is now!!! - alive.

NEW WAY ENGINE CARBURATION

NEW WAY MOTOR COMPANY
CARBURATION SYSTEMS

CARBURATION
In the following we introduce you to the many different carburation systems that were used by the New Way Motor Company and their successor the New Way Engine and Machine Company and by way of a table seek to define and identify the various systems used on each model.

REMEMBER: The following table is a work in progress and is intended as a guide for enthusiasts and researchers. It is expected that as further information comes to hand it will be updated, it's information and accuracy thereby expanded or enhansed.

CARBURATION DEVICES

The initial commercial foray into fields to replace the horse saw New Way Motor Company fitting their engines with an in house carburation device called a mixer (from c1905).

Generally these were fitted to their hit miss governed engines and were little more than a pipe setup with a cross bar to achieve a venturi effect to  draw fuel to be vaporised with incoming air.

Initially mixers were generally a straight pipe but these were quickly followed by an "L" shaped mixer. Across the mouth of the mixer a rather crude cut-away rotating half moon disc was employed functioning as a choke during starting.
In normal operation the mixer operated simply as an open throttle device (ie flat out)
All governing was achieved using the "HIT MISS" principle where on reaching governed RPM, the exhaust valve was held open thereby inhibiting suction and intake of fuel and so rendering the power stroke ineffective as no fuel mixture was drawn into the cylinder.

Technological advances in motors and machinery saw New Way quickly respond with throttle governed engines and the fitting of motor vehicle style carburetors from c1915.

The earliest New Way Motor Company carburetor was fitted to their Series "M" oil engine using exhaust passage heating to facilitate gasoline starting and to ensure effective vaporization of kerosene for ongoing running.

Carburetors utilised in ensuing years were generally third party and included those manufactured companies such as Holley, Carter, Tillotson and Zenith.

    MODEL REFERENCING TABLE
The following Table seeks to define the various carburation options in accordance with the various models produced in approximate chronological order of model production.

NOTE:- Series "A" engines were manufactured from the very late 1900 teens right through the New Way Motor Company era into the New Way Engine and Machine Company era of the 1930s. These started as a 5 HP engine and concluded in final years of production as a 6 HP engine. During this extended time in accordance with established New Way philosophy many enhansments were introduced resulting in variants to the original model.
This is of course is readily seen in the carburation table where carburetor models change at times as quickly as the year.

It is likely that while 1920s instruction manuals depict Carter Carburetors that early CH engines were fitted Holley as these were already used on the "F" Series engines of  similar horsepower.

NOTE:- Available records for CH engine carburetors don't specify which engine varient they equipped, (eg CHA, CHC ) simply stating the basic New Way Model terminology of CH only.
Meaning simply, for further break-down, original fitting on collector engine examples have to be relied upon at this point.

    NOTES:-

    1. Progression of years in design and development in carburation systems means that with time the same New Way Model may also have been fitted with a different mixer or later carburetor model. This is particularly the case with CH model engines whose production spanned a dozen years.
    2. ** - courtesy of The Carburetor Shop LLC, Missouri. New Way applications & Kit listings.
    3. # - courtesy of Antique Small engine Collectors Club extracted from The Tillotson Manufacturing Co. Original Carburetor Equipment List (1925 thru 1941
    4. ## - New Way Model was not specified but because of year defined it is expected to be fitted to one of the CH variants.
    5. NOTE 1:- J Series engines 1.5 HP and 2.5 HP were released some time before the rest of the J Series or Jewel range. Consequently the early engines of these models feature many straight mixers whereas other models in the range may only have the later "L" Mixers. (technological advancement)
    6. NOTE 2:- F Series engines were generally released as gasoline engines but special kerosene engines are documented as being available. These were a defined release from the factory and at this point we have no documentation as to what carburation was used and no examples in the registry point definitely to kerosene setup in these F Series engines. This is in stark contrast to the M Series engines where many examples of kerosene fueled engines [OIL] are found in the registry.
      1.  NOTE 3:- Tillotson carburetors as used on New Way engines have tended to deteriorate with age as they have a Pot Metal or similar metal body. Vintage carburetors by Atom and Koala are possible sources of Brass copies of Tillotson that suit some New Way engines.
        1. Atom and Koala provide an identical looking alternate option for those restoring an engine where the comparable tillotson may be unusable.
          1. Refer Koala example below.
      2. The Carburetor Shop application data for New Way engines which shows available kits for Carter DR-0. Other kits may be procured by supplying an example to enable development for your particular model.

We are always eager to add further bona fide information. Expanding information on the New Way Registry and Library site further enhances both our abilities and the ability of restorers to faithfully and as reasonably as possible bring an old New Way Work Horse back to life.

To give us updating info simply give model details of both engine and carburation that you know to be original fitting and simply email with the info to geo.covey@gmail.com. Even if you are not sure let us know and we will attempt to verify etc..

      Thanks
      George
