In the following we introduce you to the many different ignition systems that were used by the New Way Motor Company and the New Way Engine and Machine Company and by way of a table seek to define and identify the various systems used on each model.

We have started a record table but as you will see there are a lot of ??s and things we will not be aware of at all. Mistakes too??
We need your help to achieve thorough records for all New Way Engines especially for the models of Bosch and National Magnetos.

PREFACE:-
The New Way Motor Company was born in an exercise of belief in an innovative (at the time) concept that air cooled engines were the way of the future, superior to water cooled engines.
As real pioneers, in the concept of Air Cooled Engines for commerce, light industry and the farm they produced engines of superb quality. Some still work today having never been dismantled and have even been in commercial use for near a century.
DESIGN:-
Air Cooled Engine design enabled engines to be produced which were far lighter than their water cooled stable mates of the same era of development. It saw in the 20th century teen years, the lighter Air Cooled engines being introduced onto binders with the whole outfit still being hauled by horse team.

In promoting the best, (Goes and Goes Right) The New Way Motor Company certainly optioned their motors with the best in ignition systems moving with innovation and development in ignition systems as time progressed through the early 20th century.
IGNITION OPTIONS:-
- Buzz Coil Ignition
- Using Dry Cell (Primary Cells) batteries (D.C.) to supply power
A. Prone to failure especially in cold weather (Flat battery)
B. Batteries had to be closely monitored. New Way Motor Company supplied volt meters so owners could closely monitor their primary batteries under load.
C. No load testing is highly inaccurate for determining primary battery condition.
D. New Way Vibrators (Buzz Coils) were Manufactured by National Coil Company of Lansing, Michigan. Refer Company Drawing (Click)
- Using Low Voltage (DC) Magneto - called Jump Spark Ignition.
A. Branded New Way Motor Company but identical in all practical aspects to Wizard (LV) magneto.
B. Untimed, Friction driven off the flywheel via a fiber compound spring loaded wheel on the magneto.
C. Timing was not necessary as the magneto was only a D.C. power source to supply the buzz coil.
D. New Way Motor company actually supplied a special buzz coil designed specifically for use with the magneto jump start voltage supply.
E. Advantage - Reliable power source to replace battery running.
- High Voltage Magneto Ignition (HV)
- Using a crank shaft gear arrangement timed to drive an independent HV magneto. Fitted to early New Way Engines with type varying according to engine model etc.. These were sourced from the likes of Bosch, National, Liberty

- Early eg pre 1910 engines had an option of a friction drive New Way (Low Volt Magneto). The LV magneto was used to run after starting with Primary Cell both powering the Buzz Coil.
- The LV Magneto option was dropped and on late teens engines and the option of a National magneto was added.
- These magnetos appear to have been rebadged Wizard LV magnetos.
- Fitted to early single and twin Type C and Type D engines
- New Way (LV) magneto used a specially adjusted Buzz Coil (TYPE LM) in either SINGLE or TWIN coil format dependent on either single or twin cylinder application.
- Obviously specified for optimum performance catering for the difference between steady cell and varying magneto output.
- L.V magnetos are not timed. They are friction driven off the flywheel. Timing on these engines was provided by internal crank case points in the same manner as a straight Buzz Coil / Cell setup.
- HV Magnetos do not rely on Cam/Crank engine points. Their timing is fixed by gearing and adjusted by tooth positioning between gears driven by and tied to the crankshaft. The number of gears and size is totally model dependent.
- Progression of years in design and development in ignition systems means that with time the same New Way Model may also have been fitted with a different magneto model.
- "F" Series and later engines were not optioned with primary cells and buzz coils. (They were no longer regarded as being sufficiently reliable.)
- Bosch magnetos models often had production runs spanning 10-15 years
- eg DA1 - 1906 to 1920
- eg DU1 - 1908 to 1922
- Bosch serial numbers were sequential across the Bosch models. This can be used to determine the date of the magneto and consequently the likely production year of an engine where the magneto is an as fitted engine factory original.
- For example - If you have an "M " series engine missing the shroud or any engine with no serial number but it still has it's original fitted Bosch Magneto, you can fairly accurately determine the year of engine manufacture.

- Liberty is a Bosch branding / distancing endeavour related to the 20th century World Wars because of the family connections in Bosch manufacture in both Germany and USA. Very close association existed between companies even to the point of commonality of design and model similarity with early Bosch equipment.

I October, 2019 I bought a New Way model CH 5hp @ 800 rpm engine. It had been sitting in a barn since the mid 1960s. The serial number is C-6376. It has it's original Bosch FX1-ED1 high tension magneto with impulse coupling. Carb is a Zenith, I believe a model O. Carb has brass bowl and cast iron venture/throttle body. The engine has a sub base and New Way furnished pulley. It starts easily and runs OK. I'm thinking 1928-30 mfg. timeframe.
