New Way Stationary Engines

Aim - To serve and support the New Way Stationary Engine restoration community.
There was a New Way Stationary Motor inclined to Hit and Miss. It was designed that way but intermittently it would missfire and this in the confines of the beekeepers shed fired my imagination, grabbing my senses. I just loved the sound of the New Way 3.5Hp working - likely fuelled by a too rich mixture.
With each missfire came the tell tale puff of blue smoke and via the old sawbench, the beekeeping manufacturing business was underway, alive and well. Alf was in his element. Romance, nah, hard work but Hoots the New Way went a long way in firing the imagination of times past running in the present. The present, after all, that's where life is, it's not in the past, but romancing the past, that's the present if you're living it.
The priveledge of life. Present and past is now!!! - alive.

UPDATE- NEW WAY 8 H.P and 12 H.P. HORIZONTAL TWIN INSTRUCTION

LIBRARY UPDATE:
Today we have been able to add, what is probably one of the most rare and valuable New Way Instruction Documents to the library. The document of 20 pages has been supplied compliments of James L. Johnson of WA USA for personal use and a watermarked copy can be downloaded from the library. We thank James for making this very rare document available.

Covering

  • TWIN CYLINDER --- TYPE  F
    • 8 H.P. LF and 12 H.P. JF Throttle Governed
  • TWIN CYLINDER --- TYPE  C
    • 8 H.P. LC and 12 H.P. JC Hit and Miss

NEW WAY HORIZONTAL TWIN ENGINES

  • c1906 - The New Way Motor company first manufactured Horizontally opposed twin engines (Model B Type C) in the 6 / 7 H.P. size soon after the production of their first production engine, the (Model A Type C) 3.5 H.P. single cylinder air cooled vertical engine.
    • c1910 an apparent intermediate model also of 7 H.P. (Model BA Type E) produced.
      • Used top of cylinder valve/rocker exhaust setup as used on early 8/12 H.P. engines
        • Refer D11 Catalog drawings ( 8/12 H.P.)
        • Valve/rocker setup principle also used on the large single cylinder vertical 6 H.P. Model D Type D
          • Instruction Manual - 1908
  • 1910 - The New Way Motor company commenced production of the 8 H.P. and 12 H.P. Hit and Miss Twin Cylinder Horizontally opposed Engines
    • Initially used top of cylinder valve/rocker exhaust setup
      • Refer D11 Catalog drawings
    • By 1914 and C14 Catalog, engines no longer utilize the valve rocker setup.
  • c1915 - The New Way Motor company commenced production of the 8 H.P. and 12 H.P. Throttle Governed, Twin Cylinder Horizontally opposed Engines
    • Throttle governed engines use an automotive style carburetor in lieu of simple mixer.
      • Both Fuel/Governing systems available
DESIGN PROGRESSION

Analysis readily identifies that progression in technical development or enhancement by the New Way Motor Company is generally defined by Engine Type. Their Twin development is no exception.

  • Type is directly tied to engine enhancement / technical features.
  • Model is directly tied to physical design and function.
    • In other words the same type is incorporated into several different models.
    • For example New Way in producing their multiple models of light weight J series engines incorporated the "Type C" design principles in all of them. They are all Type C engines.
  1.  TYPE C - Twin production starts with 6-7 H.P. using the exact design principles of the initial single cylinder 3.5 H.P. engine also defined as a Type C.
    1. Used on early 8 H.P. and 12 H.P. engines
    2. Hit Miss Engines with so called automatic intake valve and directly actuated exhaust valve. (no rocker operating valve in top of cylinder)
  2. TYPE D - 1st recorded on 6 H.P. Vertical (1909 D9 Catalog)
    1. Later used in some 12 H.P Design (likely also on 8 H.P.)
  3. TYPE E - Late 7 H.P. design
  4. TYPE F - 8 H.P. and 12 H.P.
    1. Throttle Governed Engines (post Hit Miss Engines)
INSTRUCTION DETAIL:
The initial "Book of Instruction" (refer library) document at 44 pages covering only the 8/12 H.P. Hit Miss engines covers considerable more detail for the running and maintenance aspects of this size engine.

This later "Book of Instruction", added today, at 20 pages probably highlights the fact that there was rapidly expanding knowledge about the maintenance and running of internal combustion engines thereby meaning that much detail was deemed unnecessary.

Downloading is easy. Just go to the library. (click) Then, scroll down to and choose the document you want. These are in the "Instruction" grouping.
