Great old notated photo's from C1915 at 79, boulevard de Magenta, 10e arrondissement Paris are now ready for download.

The Photos taken not far from the centre of Paris show a New Way horizontal doing it's bit (ramming) before the relaying of the cobble stones. These are great photos courtesy of  the library of France  Bibliothèque nationale de France.

Holley Throttle Governed New Way Engines

New Way Motor Company used specialist carburetor manufacturers for many of their throttle governed engines. Different Carburetor models were supplied to suit the engine HP sizes supplied by both Tillotson and Holley.

"NEW WAY Motor Company" Mutual Benefit Association

NEW WAY LIBRARY UPDATE
With over 70 documents in the New Way Library we have just added an informative and enterprising social document of the "New-Way" Motor Company of Lansing Michigan.
The 12 page document is the "CONSTITUTION AND BY-LAWS OF THE NEW-WAY MUTUAL BENEFIT ASSOCIATION."

The 1913 Constitution expressly provided benefits for all workers of the New Way Motor Company as seen here. [Who wouldn't work for the progressive New Way Motor Company?]

• Membership compulsory for all "New Way Motor Company employees for minimal contribution.
• PRINCIPLE - To practice "charity" and brotherly consideration which tends to more closely bind the fraternal union between man and man.
• OBJECT - The object of this association shall be to create a fund for the aid and relief of its members in case of disabling sickness.
• Insurance was provided
• Flowers sent to sick members.
• Death benefits
• One of the "orders of business" at regular meetings was:- Does any Member know of any sick member or any members family in want or distress.

Australian New Way Engine Models

New Way Motor Company of Lansing Michigan was an innovative company that had a vision and desire to produce a light weight engine that was fairly portable and readily used in industry and on the farm. Theirs was the honour of being first to commercially produce Air Cooled Engines. Today the production of Air Cooled engines is based on many of the ideas and principles utilised and invented and in some cases patented by the New Way Motor Company.

LANSING PLANT and PRODUCTION
New Way commenced production in 1905 after sale of patents and equipment of the Clarkemobile Motor Company. The New-Way Motor Company commenced production in a building that was barely 100 foot long and their commercial production in the first year to 18 months consisted of Vertical 3.5 Hp. and 6-7 Hp. Horizontal engines. They commenced exporting almost immediately and Australia was a ready market for their innovative, efficient yet simple engines.

AUSTRALIAN MARKET
From 1906  J. H. Horwood Ltd were already importing New-Way engines and by 1922 nearly 1500 were in use in South Australia, their home State. NEW-WAY Motor Company Agents were established in virtually every state of Australia in the early 1900s. (source TROVE)

Horwood's Iron Foundry (Est by 1852) as the first foundry in the Colony was crucial for Horwoods becoming the largest Agricultural Equipment manufacturers in Australia and probably the Southern Hemisphere. By 1918-19 well established production facilities would enable ready adaption to easily produce a range of New-Way Engines.

LOGIC 
By 1919 New Way Motor company had ceased production of the Series "S" and "J" engines. Manufacturing concentrated on series "M" and "F" engines - compact and lighter. 

• Series "M" was a step into specific design for kerosene engines also with an option for fuel/petrol. 
• Horwoods specifically state they were only manufacturing Petrol engines.
•  It is incomprehensible Horwood with their expansive manufacturing facility would only manufacture the petrol version when the only practical difference was the carburetor. 
• This indicates they did not manufacture the Series M engines.
• New way Motor Company had ceased production of Series "S".
• Casting materials which were out of production and could be used by Horwoods to continue production in Australia.
• 2.5 Hp, 3.5 Hp, 4.5 Hp, 6 Hp
• New way Motor Company had ceased production of horizontal Series "J".
• Casting materials which were out of production and could be used by Horwoods to continue production in Australia.
• 1.5 Hp, 2 Hp, 3 Hp, 6.5 Hp
• Evidence points to Horwoods continuing production in Australia of some of the Series "S" and "J" engines. 
• Recognize that New Way Motor Company was by then producing a very limited range of HP,  and nothing below 4Hp
• Horwoods produce a wide range of engine Hp. as per the advertised range for the local engines.

The fact that New Way America was no longer producing their wide range of engine Hp. in either the vertical or horizontal petrol engines when Horwoods were advertising ready availability of local engines and locally produced parts means their facility was producing the full range of spares in their factory and foundary production facilities.

The advertisements below are exclusive in featuring Horwoods on this day. Simply same paper same day so it removes all doubt of intent and engine range and spares availibility. Both advertisements also feature the same "Local Agent" so closing the supply loop.

NOTES:-

Exhaustive research has now been done on New Way production in Australia. Where we recently thought there may have been another manufacturer of the Australian 1½ Hp. pump engine, we now believe this was actually produced by Horwoods as shown here. It should also be noted that by 1922 Horwoods was also only producing one New Way engine. This was the 4½ Hp., their most popular line of which they had apparently sold hundreds if not thousands. 

The 4½ Hp. New Way [Series "S", Model "E", Type "C"]  is the only model to fit the production volume criteria for a 4½ Hp.

Production of this magnitude is obviously not ramped up overnight. Given the advertising example is for JUNE 5 1919 it is clear that initial production of a fewer model range etc would have occurred much earlier. This is further reinforced by taking into account the ready availability of a full range of spares as declared in the advertisment.

NEW WAY TRACTORS - EGYPTIAN ORDERS

The Parent.

The New Way Motor Company exported their motors all over the world. Being based in Lansing Michigan the were in the USA industrial hub of innovation for virtually all things mechanical. Given their claims of innovation and quality is to be expected they would have alliances with other companies of like mind. One of these were "John Deere" and in this they were involved in tractor development with the  7.5 H.p. Horizontal Single Cylinder and later the New Way Horizontal Twin Engines.

International Expansion in Production.
Production of New Way Engines also occurred in Canada and Australia. New way had it's own factory in Canada while in Australia production was limited to agents etc with their own production facilities.

Development and Sales 
While The New Way Motor Company had all the skills in their own right for the production of Stationary engines they did call upon the likes of engineers from "John Deere" to be involved in development of their tractors namely those powered by their twin Cylinder Horizontal engines. John Deer engineers spent some time at New Way Facilities in the development of their tractor.

New Way Tractors were ordered internationally from the likes of Egypt from as early as 1910. While it cannot be said for certain it is quite likely that John Deere company was involved in early development stages for attachment design etc for connection to the Egyptian Ordered New Way tractors.
To Quote - "furnishing power for a number of machines used by farmers"

John Deere did not actually produce a prototype engine driven tractor until 1916. 

Advertising
Editorial statements on company development and production is found in "Gas Engines" in 1910. These are very definitive and show New Way Motor Company enthusiasm in it's Tractor Production as related to the inventors.

Egyptian Connection - Egypt has it's pyramids but, do any New Way Tractors remain in Egypt. In a dry country there is every possibility that they could have survived and to this day some may lie along the edges of the Nile discarded unused and possibly no longer appreciated.

By 1922 Horwoods had been producing New Way 4.5 Hp engines in volume for some time. This company was located in Adelaide, capital, of South Australia. The company was recognised as one of the largest producers of Agricultural Equipment in Australia and probably in the Southern Hemisphere with very large Manufacturing plant and Foundary facilities.

AGENTS -
Mid 1922 the "Australian Made" New Way 4.5 Hp Engine was being advertised as far away as Sydney, capital of New South Wales. It is interesting to note that only the 4.5 Hp is advertised by the agents which complies with the Horwoods production claims of just the 4.5 Hp production at that time.

In the following extract from the Sydney Morning Herald Newspaper for the "Australian New Way" says it all.
For those of you not familiar with Australian terminology etc :-

• "OUT BACK" is the sparsely populated inland areas of Australia, much of it desert.
• Sydney is about 850 miles due east from Adelaide and in those times by to-days standards separated by appalling roads.
• Armstrong - Holland were a heavy plant Manufacturer in Mascot, Sydney and built Australia's first Diesel Powered Drag line excavator of unit steel construction in 1930. That said they were obviously well suited as sole "Sydney" agents for the "Australian New Way"
• Sydney Morning Herald - Current audience 4.8 mil.largest in Aust.

The puzzle is coming together. We have builder and agents promoted across Australia for the 4.5 h.p. vertical.
Now we need to find who made the 1.5 Australian New Way Pump Engine. The facts of this enterprise is certainly proving elusive.
Bare Facts are conclusive - a 1.5 h.p. Pump Engine built using Australian Materials and Workmanship.

New Way Pump Engine Made in Australia

ESTABLISHING THE FACTS
In a recent article (click) we were able to provide the evidence that the 4.5 h.p New Way Engine was made in Australia by J. H. Horwood of Adelaide in large numbers. J. H. Horwood were only manufacturing the one size engine - 4.5 Hp.

NEW WAY 1 H.P. PUMP ENGINE
Pump engines in a desert continent was a means of striking at the core of the needs of the farmer and grazier. New Way Motor Company of Lansing, Michigan made their 1 hp pumper called the "Little Giant". Promotional material shows these were obviously designed with the "Rural Wife" in mind, for domestic applications around the farm house in particular.

NEW WAY 1.5 H.P. PUMP ENGINE - Made in Australia
We previously advised we were aware of this production and had hoped we could confirm which company was manufacturing them. We have been unable to confirm the manufacturer but can bring an article from 1920 that is very specific in showing credit to the extent of the manufacturing process:

• Australian Made
• Australian Workmanship
• Australian Material
• Equipment - 1.5 H.p. Farm Pump Engine. 

The following is the news paper article followed by the clear text of the same article to provide clear readability with relevant sections highlighted by New Way Station.

We are still searching to confirm the manufacturer. Given that J.H Horwood state they only manufactured the 4.5 H.p size it seems very apparent there is another manufacturer of New Way engines in Australia. WHO??
