John Deere General Catalog 5 - 1912

The New Way Motor Company obviously had a strong relationship with John Deere which extended over some years. John Deere strongly promoted the New Way Engines and Associated Power Plants as is amply illustrated and promoted in it's 1912 general catalog. John Deere's great centers of PORTLAND, SPOKAINE, SEATTLE and BOISE form the promotional backbone of the catalog.

Of significance in this developmental relationship was evidenced in the mid-teens of the 20th century when the Deere  enterprise was involved in tractor development with "New Way" utilizing their twin Cylinder Air cooled engine.

We have added an extract of the John Deere General catalog 5 to the "New Way" library. It is a 36 page document provided compliments of Heritage Acres Museum, Victoria BC, Canada, who are also the proud owners of a New Way Horizontal Twin Cylinder Engine.

• John Deere Portable Saw outfit - a portable 4 wheel mounted outfit driving 26 or 28 inch saw optioned with a range of New Way single or 7 Hp twin engines.
• "New Way Traction Saw" is excellently illustrated and a detailed description supplied as to it's workings. It is a self propelled wood sawing outfit in a genuine early tractor format.
• Sled Mounted "Rapid" Gas Engine Drag Saw utilising either the 3½ and 4½ Hp. vertical engines is well illustrated and described in detail.
• Eveready primary cell illustration as may have been used to replace factory fitted "New Way" cells use on "New Way" Buzz coils.

NEW WAY TRACTORS - EGYPTIAN ORDERS

The Parent.

The New Way Motor Company exported their motors all over the world. Being based in Lansing Michigan the were in the USA industrial hub of innovation for virtually all things mechanical. Given their claims of innovation and quality is to be expected they would have alliances with other companies of like mind. One of these were "John Deere" and in this they were involved in tractor development with the  7.5 H.p. Horizontal Single Cylinder and later the New Way Horizontal Twin Engines.

International Expansion in Production.
Production of New Way Engines also occurred in Canada and Australia. New way had it's own factory in Canada while in Australia production was limited to agents etc with their own production facilities.

Development and Sales 
While The New Way Motor Company had all the skills in their own right for the production of Stationary engines they did call upon the likes of engineers from "John Deere" to be involved in development of their tractors namely those powered by their twin Cylinder Horizontal engines. John Deer engineers spent some time at New Way Facilities in the development of their tractor.

New Way Tractors were ordered internationally from the likes of Egypt from as early as 1910. While it cannot be said for certain it is quite likely that John Deere company was involved in early development stages for attachment design etc for connection to the Egyptian Ordered New Way tractors.
To Quote - "furnishing power for a number of machines used by farmers"

John Deere did not actually produce a prototype engine driven tractor until 1916. 

Advertising
Editorial statements on company development and production is found in "Gas Engines" in 1910. These are very definitive and show New Way Motor Company enthusiasm in it's Tractor Production as related to the inventors.

Egyptian Connection - Egypt has it's pyramids but, do any New Way Tractors remain in Egypt. In a dry country there is every possibility that they could have survived and to this day some may lie along the edges of the Nile discarded unused and possibly no longer appreciated.
