New Way Stationary Engines

Aim - To serve and support the New Way Stationary Engine restoration community.
There was a New Way Stationary Motor inclined to Hit and Miss. It was designed that way but intermittently it would missfire and this in the confines of the beekeepers shed fired my imagination, grabbing my senses. I just loved the sound of the New Way 3.5Hp working - likely fuelled by a too rich mixture.
With each missfire came the tell tale puff of blue smoke and via the old sawbench, the beekeeping manufacturing business was underway, alive and well. Alf was in his element. Romance, nah, hard work but Hoots the New Way went a long way in firing the imagination of times past running in the present. The present, after all, that's where life is, it's not in the past, but romancing the past, that's the present if you're living it.
The priveledge of life. Present and past is now!!! - alive.

Australian New Way Air Cooled Engine Agents

Further Australian Production and Distribution Update

Australian New Way Engine Production.
By 1922 Horwoods had been producing New Way 4.5 Hp engines in volume for some time. This company was located in Adelaide, capital, of South Australia. The company was recognised as one of the largest producers of Agricultural Equipment in Australia and probably in the Southern Hemisphere with very large Manufacturing plant and Foundary facilities.

AGENTS -
Mid 1922 the "Australian Made" New Way 4.5 Hp Engine was being advertised as far away as Sydney, capital of New South Wales. It is interesting to note that only the 4.5 Hp is advertised by the agents which complies with the Horwoods production claims of just the 4.5 Hp production at that time.

In the following extract from the Sydney Morning Herald Newspaper for the "Australian New Way" says it all.
For those of you not familiar with Australian terminology etc :-

  • "OUT BACK" is the sparsely populated inland areas of Australia, much of it desert.
  • Sydney is about 850 miles due east from Adelaide and in those times by to-days standards separated by appalling roads.
  • Armstrong - Holland were a heavy plant Manufacturer in Mascot, Sydney and built Australia's first Diesel Powered Drag line excavator of unit steel construction in 1930. That said they were obviously well suited as sole "Sydney" agents for the "Australian New Way"
  • Sydney Morning Herald - Current audience 4.8 mil.largest in Aust.

The puzzle is coming together. We have builder and agents promoted across Australia for the 4.5 h.p. vertical.
Now we need to find who made the 1.5 Australian New Way Pump Engine. The facts of this enterprise is certainly proving elusive.
Bare Facts are conclusive - a 1.5 h.p. Pump Engine built using Australian Materials and Workmanship.

We are going to add this to the previous post (click) so much of the related research detail is together.

New Way Pump Engine Made in Australia

ESTABLISHING THE FACTS
In a recent article (click) we were able to provide the evidence that the 4.5 h.p New Way Engine was made in Australia by J. H. Horwood of Adelaide in large numbers. J. H. Horwood were only manufacturing the one size engine - 4.5 Hp.

NEW WAY 1 H.P. PUMP ENGINE
Pump engines in a desert continent was a means of striking at the core of the needs of the farmer and grazier. New Way Motor Company of Lansing, Michigan made their 1 hp pumper called the "Little Giant". Promotional material shows these were obviously designed with the "Rural Wife" in mind, for domestic applications around the farm house in particular.

NEW WAY 1.5 H.P. PUMP ENGINE - Made in Australia
We previously advised we were aware of this production and had hoped we could confirm which company was manufacturing them. We have been unable to confirm the manufacturer but can bring an article from 1920 that is very specific in showing credit to the extent of the manufacturing process:

  • Australian Made
  • Australian Workmanship
  • Australian Material
  • Equipment - 1.5 H.p. Farm Pump Engine.
The following is the news paper article followed by the clear text of the same article to provide clear readability with relevant sections highlighted by New Way Station.

We are still searching to confirm the manufacturer. Given that J.H Horwood state they only manufactured the 4.5 H.p size it seems very apparent there is another manufacturer of New Way engines in Australia. WHO??

NEW WAY ENGINE HORSEPOWER

NEW WAY HORSEPOWER :
The New Way Motor Company in its infancy produced excellent engines that were over-engineered. Horsepower may have been small but the engines were large. That said because they were air cooled they were still small and or light by comparison with their Water cooled counterparts.

TIME:
As time progressed New Way substantially reduced the weight per horsepower ratio such that by the end of the 1920's they were prodicing a very compact and light twin cylinder vertical engine.

POPULARITY:
As an exercise we have run a chart that depicts the totals by HP of all New Way engines registered no matter what the format. (ie Vertical, Horizontal, Single or Twin.)

241 Registered

NEW WAY ENGINE IGNITION

The New Way Motor Company of Lansing Michigan, prided themselves in their machine:
  • Reliability ( Goes and Goes Right )
  • Beauty
  • Light Weight - A woman could use it for washing, butter churning, pumping, electricity - (why shouldn't the modern woman have the conveniences of the mechanical age)
  • Range of sizes and configurations to suit the intended use.
Base Model Battery Ignition.
All this was achieved by their engines - BUT there was one serious flaw if you owned their early engines or the base level with battery ignition. The batteries went flat. We are not talking about secondary batteries like you have in your car and can be charged but Primary Cells - Zinc/Carbon rod Cells that couldn't be charged and are prone to failure.

Now - By Murphy's law, things will always break down when you need them the most. This is a basic law of physics and applies equally to primary batteries and has strong scientific basis. It is a little like the "Law of Natural Selection". If your mate hits you with a club and you are strong you will probably dribble but survive and not only that, keep working, even if at a lower level (on your knees). BUT if you are weak the blow will probably finish you off, you'll cease working and everything around you stops - you're dead.

So what is the parallel here. Well with Murphy's and Natural Selection you get a cold snap and just when you wanted the old engine to start the most, it wouldn't. The primary cells were weak, the cold stresses them to the max, no current, no spark and no burbling engine. They are dead too !! Bury them.

New Way Solution - Upmarket STEP 1
  • Dynamo or DC Generator. This is a low voltage DC generator that could be used to run the Buzz coil instead of or switched to from the Primary cells on starting. They literally supply the DC instead of the batteries.
    • New Way had their own labeled "New Way dynamos which I believe were a re-branded Wizard dynamo. [ these were sometimes called magnetos in the early days of engines but is not really the correct terminology ]
      • Dynamo's were friction driven off the flywheel and because they are low voltage D.C. they do not require timing like the H.T. magneto.
        • The D.C. runs the Buzz coil to produce the spark timed by internal contacts within the engine crankcase, based on the position of the crank shaft. The spark is timed just before the piston's top dead centre. (TDC)
    • In some instances start was with Cells, then switched over to run on the dynamo. This of course extended battery life considerably.
    • Two Models of Buzz coils were produced by New Way to suit either.
      • Dry Cells
      • Dynamos
New Way Solution - Upmarket STEP 2. - Lifting the bar on Reliability
  • High Tension or High Voltage Magneto - timed by points within the magneto where as the old and cheaper method with a Buzz Coil used points within the motor itself for spark timing. Various model Magnetos were used depending on the year of production and the Type of Engine.
    • H.T. Magneto's (also may be called H.V.) are always direct driven  generally through gears off the crank shaft. They do not use friction drive because of slippage between the magneto drive and the flywheel. Slippage means the timing would be continually changing - totally unacceptable.
    • Some New Ways have been fitted with cog and chain on the main shaft to direct drive a magneto as "after market". This provided a simple upgrade from Buzz coil for reliability without the need for the gear setup. It provides a fixed drive but is not as reliable as gears because of the likes of chain slap.
    • H.T. Magnetos were fitted from various companies. (No Cells or Buzz Coil required.)
      • Bosch Magneto
      • Liberty Magneto (badged Bosch)
      • National Magneto
      • Eisemann magneto (Intergrated flywheel system - Later verticals eg 1930's singles)
      • Bosch Integrated Flywheel Magneto - later 1930's engines

Advancing Cell Reliability
To ensure you were not inconvenienced by Mr Murphy you could purchase a Pocket Ammeter from the New Way Motor Company so that you were aware when your cells were on the way out.

NOTE - Ammeter not a Voltmeter. Why you might ask. Can't I just check the voltage of my dry cells? Yes you could but that will not tell you the condition of your cells as, even if nearly flat, they can still show proper voltage.

Why? Because as the cell gets used it can't produce the same current even if the voltage is the same. This means it has voltage but can't supply power (no current) so the buzz coil fails, so no spark.

Using the Ammeter - You connect the ammeter in the circuit [ not across the battery] so all the circuits power goes through the ammeter [series]. The ammeter passes current easily so it won't stop your circuit from working and you can make sure the cells can supply sufficient power. You are checking the working current is high enough. If not the Buzz coil won't work.

The New Way Ammeter

  • Packaged in a small Bergundy/Red cardboard box about 2.75 inch square x .75 inch high
  • Plated with familiar circular raised New Way trade mark on front.
  • Instructions for use included
  • Pocket Ammeter is just over 2 inch in diameter
  • Ammeter Range 0 - 30 Amps

Secondary cells
These usually do not have the same problem of not being capable of supplying current to run a Buzz Coil unless they are very flat (low voltage) or there is an open circuit cell. This means with a secondary cell you can usually get away with measuring the voltage accross the battery terminals with a voltmeter.

We truly hope this helps you next time you have a Stationary Engine Ignition Problem whatever your engine manufacturer.

Further information is now available on our New Way Ignition Page (Click). This includes Magnetos used, spindle heights and magneto bolt patterns.

Do you have Ignition?

A NEW WAY RECORD

NEW WAY NEWS FROM DOWN UNDER

Fathoms of Useless water

THE DRIEST CONTINENT - Calls for reliability in the extreme
Australia is a vast country with vast open spaces and much of it desert. In the early days of Australia's European history this called for a "She'll be right mate" when often that was based hoping for the best despite all the evidence to the contrary.

The following is an article from South Australia that in essence expresses this pioneering spirit in Australia. Imagine you are in a dry near desert area where it may not have rained in months or years and you are about to bore for water. You are miles from anywhere "Out beyond the Black Stump", can't afford a breakdown and someone is desperate for water for his stock because there is no surface water.

You head out from Adelaide, the capital, equipped with a boring rig powered by your faithful New Way Engine. And yes you strike water and yes your bore is 1010 Feet deep. Yet look at the hopes involved and dashed at the various stages in this bore and by the contractor. But "what the Heck" it is still a record. But that is "Australia all Over" so enjoy the article and think of the Pioneering Forefathers wherever you or they lived. Miles from anywhere with primitive gear and a truck load of resourcefulness is your best asset.

Enjoy.

THE MURRAY PIONEER  -  OCTOBER  8  1914

BORING FOR WATER.
NORTH OF THE MURRAY,
Mr. S. M. Campbell, of the  firm of
Horwood  & Co.,  Adelaide,   passed
through Renmark on his way to Ade-
laide  Friday. For some   time   past,
Mr. Campbell with two   assistants
has  been  busy on  Lake  Victoria
station sinking bores in the hope of
striking a flow of fresh water. Up
to date two bores have  been put
down.  The   first  at “  Butcher s  ”
was abandoned at 300 feet, the water
showing  no less than  ten  ounces of
salt to the gallon at that depth.  An
underground salt stream had been
encountered. The second bore was
put down near Nulla, and at a
depth of 1010 feet three ounce water
was obtainined. Three ounce water
if there are no other solids but pure
salt, is always considered suitable for
sheep.  Unfortunately  the  Nulla
water  was found  to contain  soda.
Mr. Campbell is very hopeful that
a  real  good  supply  of stock water
may yet  be  found  at  Nulla, and   is
most  anxious to jcontinue  boring oper-
ations to a greater depth.  He is of
opinion that good, stock water may
be  found. There has been  noticed an
improvement  in the Nulla bore water
since the 800 feet level was reached.
At 900 feet  three ounce water  rose
to within nine feet of the surface.
Mr.  Campbell has had much ex-
perience in boring operations. He
has sunk for and discovered the pre-
cious metal in Western  Australia.
He has searched the dry Mallee coun-
try and not in vain, for  good stock
water. Before the Browns Well to
Paringa line was commenced  Mr.
Campbell was deputed  to find water,
if possible, along the proposed routes,
and  the  bores at Wanbi (which only
goes one quarter of an ounce) and
many other places  testify to his skill.
All Mr. Campbell's plants are driven
by  a   six  h.p. "New Way”  engine;
“They are very reliable,” says   Mr.
Campbell.  The  1010 feet at Nulla is

a record for this engine.

NEW WAY ENGINES - MADE IN AUSTRALIA

Australian New Way Engine
Word has it that New Way engines were also made in Lansing Michigan USA.
But as we all know those Yankees love a conspiracy so here is proof that they were actually made in Australia in large volumes. Were they ever made in US, it makes you wonder.

This is an excerpt from Australias newspaper archive (TROVE). The newspaper was located in Adelaide, Capital of South Australia but the article was essentially carried in 3 major city Newspapers around the time.

Chronicle (Adelaide) 24 September 1921
THE EXHIBITS.
J. H. HORW00D and CO., LTD,

“New-Way” Engines have been offered
by this company continually for the last
15 years, and it is only of late that Messrs.
Horwood and Co., Ltd., have commenced
Manufacturing “New-Way” Engines in
Australia on a large scale. Only one size
is made at present, but with modern tools
and equipment, 4½ “New-Way” Engines
are now being produced in large quantities
at the company's up-to-date works in
Franklin-street.

NOTE:
It should be pointed out that Horwoods had been in Manufacturing and/or Foundry enterprise for around 80 years at that time so it is expected would easily tool up for their New Way production.

Interesting when you see it in Black and White. So now you've seen it, we know they made New Way engines in the following countries:
  • Australia
  • Canada
  • Michigan USA
Everyone, Newspaper Archives are a great place to start in researching your old oily or Hit and Miss engine.

NEW WAY OUTFIT WOODWORK - Assembled in Portland Oregon

NEW WAY RESEARCH
We have just found documentation DATED 1911 quoting an executive of the New Way Motor Company stating that metal products were sent from Lansing Michigan (east) to the west for assembly with/on timber products.  Timber was sourced locally and since Portland is near the Oregon border, this likely meant from Washington State or Oregon.
Presently we are trying to find out if the installation and timber work was done by a contract company in Portland or by a woodworking outpost of New Way along with actual location and duration of operation.

VOLUME:
We know that New Way produced many different types of outfits. These included ranges of Pressure Sprayers, Pumps, Portable Trucks and sleds etc. The fact that they sent the metal to the timber likely indicates a high timber volume requirement and an expertise located in the west coast.

SOME LIKELY TIMBER BASED OUTFITS:

  1. Wheeled Cart Mounted Vertical engine
  2. Wheeled Cart Mounted Horizontal Twin Engine
  3. Wheeled Cart Mounted Portable Saw Rig
  4. Wheeled Cart Mounted Force Pumper
  5. SLED type of points 1-4 (allowed mounting to any portable outfit)

DISTRIBUTION:
The closeness to the coast and export facilities likely made Portland an ideal location with plentiful quality timber in the hinterlands. With Australia being a high volume export destination for New Way Equipment the West Coast presented an ideal international freighting opportunity.

"NEW WAY ENGINES" Manufactured in Australia

New Way Engines were Manufactured in Australia
MANUFACTURING
For some time we have suspected but did not have actual proof that New Way Engines were manufactured in other than their own Factories in USA and Canada.

Lansing Michigan  - USA
From 1905 New Way Motor Company produced their innovative and commercially produced Air Cooled Engines for the workplace be it Farm, Factory or President.

Ontario  - CANADA
New Way had their plant in Ontario from Ca 1910 - 1912 and produced engines in that country under Canadian Patents.

ADELAIDE, South Australia - AUSTRALIA
We have just found proof that in this vast land of Australia that New Way engines were possibly made in Two (2) factories. This included supply of both materials and workmanship not just assembly of parts.
We now know for sure that J. H. Horwood, large scale machinery merchants and manufacturers of Adelaide produced the 4½ H.P. vertical engine for considerable time as their only New Way Product because of popularity with farmers and well borers etc. This commenced ca 1918 - 1919 and possibly earlier in small volumes.

Manufactured Elsewhere - AUSTRALIA
From records we have found, 1½ H.P Jewels were also manufactured in Australia at a similar or earlier time that J.H. Horwood was supposedly only producing the 4½ H.P. Verticals.
So where were they manufactured - we are still searching.

New Way Motor Company started with J.H. Horwood as an agent in ca 1906. Horwoods were a large agricultural company in their own right having been in business since the mid 1800s. They supplied New Way engines to Australian Government contracts and were one of the most prolific sellers of New Way Engines in Australia selling many thousands.

We are assembling the documentary evidence so watch this space in the very near future. It is all very interesting.

New Way Motor Company - D9 General Catalog

New Way Enthusiasts
It has happened again - We have been able to make available to New Way Engine Enthusiasts a new, rare and very informative document. This is the second one in very recent times along with the New Way Horizontal Twin Hitt Miss Instruction that we have been able to make available.

New Way Motor Company of Lansing michigan, produced many cataloges with their general range catalogs usually prefixed by a D. This is illustrated by one of their readily available catalogs, the D-11. The catalog depicting the New Way Products of 1911.

Today we are advising that we have the New Way Catalog D-9 {1909} available for download. This is a great catalog of over 50 pages. Considering it's age, it is in magnificent condition. We have cleaned it up for clarity and presentation. It gives a wonderful insight into the very early years of the New Way Motor Company and their product range. This includes the early use of friction magneto (dynamo) which produced a voltage supply in lieu of dry cells for the operation of the Buzz Coil used to generate the ignition sparks. The depiction shows the magneto along with it's mounting bracket and alignment with the large engine flywheel.

NOTE - 2 pages were torn- we used a bit of newwaystation licence to replace missing info. as noted.

You just never know when the next rare new way document will make an appearance. If you can help - please do.

New Way Horizontal Twin Engine Instruction

NEW WAY TWIN DOCUMENTATION
New Way produced excellent detailed documents.

In particular, Catalogs covered either individual types or their range of products. Their major catalogs were prefixed by a D followed by a number indicating year of production. eg D-11 indicating 1911 production.

Extensive detail was also incorporated into their Book(s) of Instruction and Repair Price Lists. These were designed and promoted to equip the engine owner with sufficient knowledge to run and maintain their engine for the vast majority of running problems.

Today we announce that we have added the Book of Instruction for the 8 and 12 Hp [JC / LC] to our free down load library. It has been a long time coming but we hope it has been worth the wait.

Note this is for the Hitt Miss engines not for the Throttle governed engines of the same size or the 7Hp very early twin. We are still hopeful of getting these instruction manuals in the near future. If you know someone with one of these instructions we encourage you to give them a nudge in the hope we might be able to make it available for others.
Here is the document address - go for it!! : TWIN HORIZONTAL INSTRUCTION Hit Miss It is an excellent, clean and quality 44 page document. The original document size was 172mm X 250mm. It is best to print double sided to A4 then trim to size if you don't want to leave it as A4.

All up we have close to 50 documents available for download. We also invite you to have a look in the library There may well be something there that will really help you in your New Way enthusiasm.

The New Way Poet

 EASTER
Celebration Time

Easter, that time of year Christians hold dear as we remember the life, message and sacrifice of Christ. A message that almost singularly, and truly brings hope, faith, promise and certain love in a very mixed up world.

Celebrate .. Celebrate.. Celebrate
Yes : A "New Way" of living : A New Life

At the end of the day, the pen and speech have always been more powerful than the sword. Wars come and go, people suffer and die but the words and messages of promise carry with them a lasting strength.

LIBRARY NEWS

Ø       We have recently added 2 more 4 page documents to the library - the Abbott and the Wood
    • The brochure from Walter A Wood is our first UK company document, originating from Sussex England.
    • Walter A Wood re-badged "New Way" as a "Wood". We do have an example of these registered in the registry.
    • The "Abbott" four page leaflet was produced for E. H. ABBOTT, LAMBERTVILLE, N. J. and includes the industrially provocative, excellent poetry you see below.

Ø       We expect a New Way Horizontal Twin Instruction should be available soon

The New Way Poet
We have located a "New Way"  poem which we want to share and it expresses eminently style and belief about an efficient simplicity in the "New Way Engine" . This can also be downloaded from the library as part of the original 4 page "Abbott" document. Please enjoy.

WE GREET YOU AT "THE FAIR."

An Air Cooled Engine came to the Fair,
And a prosperous farmer saw it there.
He winked his eye and cast a smile,
And then suggested " I like your style."

The Engine answered, "my name's New Way,
I'm coming to see you and spend the day."
The day was spent in pleasant toils,
The Farmer reaping all the spoils.

The Air Cooled Engine is with him yet,
On the Roll of Honor, the farmer's pet.
Powerful, simple, strong, but light,
It lightens his burden day and night.

It's brothers came to the neighborhood
And promised the farmers they'd be good,
We'll grind your feed and saw your wood,
And all your labor digest for food.

And as you breathe, we cool by air,
There is plenty of it everywhere.
I met my master at "The Fair,"
I came to answer the farmer's prayer.

The old style engine is on its way
With a water tank like a load of hay.
And a mass of troublesome leaky pipes,
And a jacket to freeze and burst at night.

It's going homeward, but it don't know where,
For it's made so many farmers swear;
It's a dead one, it's had it's day,
So keep it moving, the farmers pray.
....................................

Remember the full document is available for download from the library.
If you have a New Way Engine to register just send us  engine details and a couple of pictures to:   geo.covey@gmail.com

Have a Great New Way Day.

Advertising Release - A 20 page Booklet

Hello from New Way Station.

We have been doing quite a bit of research and thought it may be good to point out how important advertising is in determining what happened within a company and what key events may have been that had significant effect on it's production. eg wars

RECORDS
New Way Motor Company records may be in short supply but we certainly can't say that about their advertising. What does advertising tell us - many things
ADVERTISING
Consequently, well researched, New Way Advertising is an excellent method of :
  • Determining what was available to the market place including incentives and restrictions
  • Determining when models were introduced or changed. eg
      • Twins Change from Radial Finned Cylinder Cooling to fully cylindrical and back again
      • Twins change from Hitt Miss Governing to Throttle Governing
      • Twins go from single to Dual Carburetors
  • Determining what was used in a particular field
      • Reliable, Light and powerful for ride operators
      • Multifunctional for farmers
      • What size was used on drilling rigs
      • What size was used on Spray Plants or Concrete plants
  • Determining what companies fitted New Way Products to their machines and why? eg.
      • Light engines on binders
      • Compact for Lighting Plants eg Marco Electric
We have just added another Booklet to the New Way Library ready for download. There are some really excellent adverts formatted to fit A4 size pages. The uniqueness of some of these adverts make them great to have. This example of advertising/testimony for Carnival Ride Operators compliments of FultonHistory from the "BillBoard" is just one example. It's clear and easily read when printed. Enjoy!!

The 20 page booklet is Advertising Booklet No 4

New Way Engine Horizontal Twin Instructions

TAKING THE BULL BY THE HORNS
We have decided to assemble a New Way Twin Instruction based on the format of previous new way instruction booklets and make it available for free download from the New Way Library site.

WHY - Many owners of New Way Horizontal Twins have engines but no instruction specific to their engine format. Do we think the originals are extinct, NOT at all, but they may be a threatened species and they certainly aren't available to us at this time.

A Dynosaur Project - Definitely not - The principles that the New Way Motor Company introduced and developed are amply evident in the air cooled engines of today. In producing these documents we will endeavor to bridge time to ensure there is clear understanding of the pioneering and engineering developments that were at the core of New Way Motor Company's engines.

WHEN - We already have a lot of information that is very applicable to hand we just don't have the original documents. Assembly is very time consuming and we envisage producing one for the early 6-7 and 7 Hp models and another for the 8 & 12Hp models in both Hitt - Miss and Throttle governed engines. There is referencing to consider and sort through so it will not be a quick process.

WHAT - Do you have any material on the Horizontal Twins that you can help us with we would be very appreciative. What sort of things?

  • Documents
  • Descriptive information
  • Partial Twin Instruction manuals how ever small a part.
Just email it to us so we can sort and assemble into a very informative well rounded instruction manual.
geo.covey@gmail.com  We would love to hear from you.

ORIGINAL - In the beginning there was the "NEW WAY TWIN WORD" and it was available to all who would cherish and purchase a New Way Twin Engine. Then came the passage of time and those who had, lost, and even others sold, still others had, but did not make known. We remain in the passage, yet the passage may still be long and tedious. One day an original will appear and the owners will rejoice that the original has finally been revealed to all owners. In the mean time we will be patient till the original is revealed and work with what we know.

It's close to Christmas

New Way Engine Registry and Library

NOVEMBER 1st NEWS - October has been a busy month with good growth in the Registry and the library. Much of the library growth can be contributed to the generosity of the Smithsonian Trade Libraries and also to an apparent non new way enthusiast to whom we are deeply grateful. (Poster)

Great documents from the New Way Motor Company covering a wide range of years. New Way Motor Company targeted their market well with their advertising and brochures.

LIBRARY (4 New Releases) - free download !!!
  • D20 CATALOG - Covers the New Way Multipurpose Engine and is sectionally written in Spanish, French and English. A beautiful document of 32 pages. Text is original size, you may need to print to fit to make the most of this excellent piece of literature.
  • 365 Day Kerosene Engine (Series M) Flier - A short flier promoting the kerosene Series M engine for its advantages and year round viability when compared to a dedicated gasoline motor.
  • New Way Saw Rig -  A 2 page flier promoting the New Way Twin Engine Saw Rig. Optional engine fitments are openly stated allowing the farmer/commercial enterprise to taylor their order to their specific requirements.
  • D18A CATALOG - Titled "Sunlight of Success" this is an excellent catalog that highlights the impact of the years of  the Ist World War (WW1) on the American social landscape. The 12 page catalog deals dominantly with the Series "M" engines.
Enjoy and Enthuse.

These documents give a lot of understanding and background to the "New Way Motor Company" as they negotiated the challenges and changes that were driving forces in the economy of the day. Their's was a time of social upheaval from WW1 along with probable unprecedented mechanical advancement. The diversification of uses, of the Internal Combustion engine was at a crossroads as men pitted their minds to solve confronting problems. For some the simple P.T.O. (Power Take Off) would be a revolution that spelt challenge or disaster. New Way Motor Company was NOT immune to these forces of enterprise.

New Way Buzz Coil Ignition

WE HAVE IGNITION
You might have guessed this is in part Tribute to Neil Armstrong and his band of Space Travellers.
Buzz Coils (Buzz Aldrin was there Too!!)

New Way Motor Company prided themselves like our space travellers in having the best when it came to reliability in the ignition department.
  • Ist choice High Tension Magneto Ignition.
    • Bosch - Various models
    • National
    • Later Models - Eisemann flywheel Magneto
  • 2nd choice Low Tension Magneto Ignition combined with 4 New Way Dry cells with a buzz coil
    • New Way L.T. Magneto (essentially a rebadged Wizard L.T. Magneto
    • Magnetos were friction driven off the Large Flywheel
    • L.T. Magnetos had a weighted, sprung governor to prevent over revving of the magneto.
      • Over-revving would increase the voltage and effect the buzz coil operation/adjustment since there is no other means of voltage regulation.
    • The engine could be started on cells and buzz coil then switched over to L.T. Magneto and Buzz Coil
  • 3rd choice stand alone 4 New Way Dry cells with a buzz coil
    • Cheapest original purchase option but the dearest to run because of cell replacement.
    • Very prone to failure in frosty cold conditions.
Quality being a foremost consideration at least 2 models of Buzz coil were produced
  • Buzz Coil Model "L"
    • Tuned or adjusted for Dry Cell Working
  • Buzz Coil Model "LM"
    • Tuned or adjusted for L.T. Magneto {Dynamo} Working
The Dynamo will produce in the order of 6 volts D.C. ripple unlike the four dry cells that produce 6 Volts D.C.
  • I do not know the difference in electrical characteristics of the buzz coils
  • The boxes look the same in virtually every aspect including size.
  • Different Magnetic Flux characteristics probably drove the need to produce two units to achieve "Best performance"
  • The brass Tag readily tells them apart
