New Way Stationary Engines

Aim - To serve and support the New Way Stationary Engine restoration community.
There was a New Way Stationary Motor inclined to Hit and Miss. It was designed that way but intermittently it would missfire and this in the confines of the beekeepers shed fired my imagination, grabbing my senses. I just loved the sound of the New Way 3.5Hp working - likely fuelled by a too rich mixture.
With each missfire came the tell tale puff of blue smoke and via the old sawbench, the beekeeping manufacturing business was underway, alive and well. Alf was in his element. Romance, nah, hard work but Hoots the New Way went a long way in firing the imagination of times past running in the present. The present, after all, that's where life is, it's not in the past, but romancing the past, that's the present if you're living it.
The priveledge of life. Present and past is now!!! - alive.

NEW WAY OUTFIT WOODWORK - Assembled in Portland Oregon

NEW WAY RESEARCH
We have just found documentation DATED 1911 quoting an executive of the New Way Motor Company stating that metal products were sent from Lansing Michigan (east) to the west for assembly with/on timber products.  Timber was sourced locally and since Portland is near the Oregon border, this likely meant from Washington State or Oregon.
Presently we are trying to find out if the installation and timber work was done by a contract company in Portland or by a woodworking outpost of New Way along with actual location and duration of operation.

VOLUME:
We know that New Way produced many different types of outfits. These included ranges of Pressure Sprayers, Pumps, Portable Trucks and sleds etc. The fact that they sent the metal to the timber likely indicates a high timber volume requirement and an expertise located in the west coast.

SOME LIKELY TIMBER BASED OUTFITS:

  1. Wheeled Cart Mounted Vertical engine
  2. Wheeled Cart Mounted Horizontal Twin Engine
  3. Wheeled Cart Mounted Portable Saw Rig
  4. Wheeled Cart Mounted Force Pumper
  5. SLED type of points 1-4 (allowed mounting to any portable outfit)

DISTRIBUTION:
The closeness to the coast and export facilities likely made Portland an ideal location with plentiful quality timber in the hinterlands. With Australia being a high volume export destination for New Way Equipment the West Coast presented an ideal international freighting opportunity.

"NEW WAY ENGINES" Manufactured in Australia

New Way Engines were Manufactured in Australia
MANUFACTURING
For some time we have suspected but did not have actual proof that New Way Engines were manufactured in other than their own Factories in USA and Canada.

Lansing Michigan  - USA
From 1905 New Way Motor Company produced their innovative and commercially produced Air Cooled Engines for the workplace be it Farm, Factory or President.

Ontario  - CANADA
New Way had their plant in Ontario from Ca 1910 - 1912 and produced engines in that country under Canadian Patents.

ADELAIDE, South Australia - AUSTRALIA
We have just found proof that in this vast land of Australia that New Way engines were possibly made in Two (2) factories. This included supply of both materials and workmanship not just assembly of parts.
We now know for sure that J. H. Horwood, large scale machinery merchants and manufacturers of Adelaide produced the 4½ H.P. vertical engine for considerable time as their only New Way Product because of popularity with farmers and well borers etc. This commenced ca 1918 - 1919 and possibly earlier in small volumes.

Manufactured Elsewhere - AUSTRALIA
From records we have found, 1½ H.P Jewels were also manufactured in Australia at a similar or earlier time that J.H. Horwood was supposedly only producing the 4½ H.P. Verticals.
So where were they manufactured - we are still searching.

New Way Motor Company started with J.H. Horwood as an agent in ca 1906. Horwoods were a large agricultural company in their own right having been in business since the mid 1800s. They supplied New Way engines to Australian Government contracts and were one of the most prolific sellers of New Way Engines in Australia selling many thousands.

We are assembling the documentary evidence so watch this space in the very near future. It is all very interesting.
